Horror is Having a Moment (and We're Here For It)

Two images from the Apple TV show Widow's Bay

If you've been paying attention lately, it feels like horror is everywhere.

The box office phenomenon Backrooms has taken a piece of internet folklore and transformed it into one of the year's biggest theatrical events. Meanwhile, Apple TV's Widow's Bay has become a breakout hit by blending small town mystery, supernatural horror, and unforgettable characters into one of TV's most talked-about new shows. As creators of Dark Providence, we couldn't be more excited about this moment, because it points to something we've believed for a long time: People don't just want scares. They want mysteries.

They want to feel like they've stumbled into a place with secrets buried beneath the surface.

And they want rich and compelling characters to follow into the darkness.

Clark from the movie Backrooms

In Backrooms, it's an impossible labyrinth lurking behind ordinary reality. In Widow's Bay, it's a cursed New England town whose residents know more than they're saying. In Dark Providence, it's Providence itself—a city built on hidden histories, occult societies, ritual murders, and forces that have been quietly shaping events for nearly a century.

These stories allow audiences to do more than passively consume content. Instead, they’re invited to investigate, theorize, connect clues, and to become part of the mystery.

This kind of horror is our jam – where the setting itself becomes a character, the danger unfolds like a conspiracy, and every answer reveals a larger question.

It's also why New England remains such fertile ground for the genre. From Stephen King to H.P. Lovecraft to today's new wave of creators, there's something about old towns, isolated communities, foggy harbors, and misty graveyards that never fails to capture our imagination.

We're thrilled to see audiences being all-in on stories that combine mystery, atmosphere, worldbuilding, and smart, captivating horror. And if you've been enjoying Backrooms or Widow's Bay, we think you'll feel right at home in the shadows of Dark Providence.

Just don't expect Providence to give up its secrets easily.
